About the Manual

This manual has been prepared with three main goals:

1. To give an overview of the technology involved with biogas production and use,
2. To give guidance in the design and sizing of biogas facilities, and
3. To give guidance in the safe and efficient operation of these systems.

The target audience mainly consists of the owners and operators of biogas facilities. It especially targets those whose goal is to produce renewable energy and those who will use agricultural organic materials as a primary feedstock. While the manual is intended to represent conditions (e.g. weather, economic and political conditions) as they exist in Ontario, it will have relevance for the rest of Canada, North America and elsewhere.

There are three sections in this manual:

1. Biogas Production and Use – An Overview
2. System Design
3.  System Operation

The information in Section A is relevant for all users.

The information in Section B is more applicable for farmers and others who have an interest in AD but who need advice in selection of inputs, pretreatment and feeding technologies, types of digesters, gas treatment, storage and utilization, digestate storage and utilization, safety, material selection, sizing and economics.

The information in Section C is designed for those who will be in charge of the day-to-day operations of AD systems and their supervisors and will cover topics in the areas such as monitoring, maintenance, start-up, shut down, gas yield and quality and trouble-shooting.
